This week is the final week to submit portfolios for the Iowa Art All-State Competition. Please make sure to check that your students are creating their portfolios and ready to submit.  Please do not let them wait until the last minute.  Reminder that teachers do not have to write recommendations for their students to start.  Please just forward them the website and push them to start right away.

CALL FOR PARTICIPANT SCHOOL DISTRICTS
Arts-Based Creative Teaching Strategies 
Professional Development for Special Education Teachers

​The Kennedy Center Office of VSA and Accessibility is seeking school districts from around the country to participate in a unique and new professional development program to train all special education teachers from a school district in Arts-Based Creative Teaching Strategies under the direction of MINDPOP from Austin, Texas.

Creative Teaching is an arts-based instructional approach to education. Teachers will learn instructional strategies—instructional frameworks—that can be used across grade level, curricula, and lesson cycle throughout the school year. These strategies ultimately give opportunities for students with disabilities to interact with their curricula through four arts disciplines. The goal for each strategy is to deepen critical and creative thinking, as evidence by the research-basis behind each strategy. District will receive $10,000 over two years to defray participation costs.

SUMMER ART RESIDENCY: UNIVERSITY OF IOWA

Students in grades 9-12 (current academic year) may apply for the Summer Art Residency (SAR), an immersive 3–week residency at The University of Iowa’s Belin-Blank Center. Residency takes place July 7th through July 26th, 2019. Learn from world-class faculty on one of the premier arts campuses in the US. Participate in classes, workshops, evening tours, lectures, and events that will stretch you as an artist. The residency concludes with an art and reading showcase. Priority will be given to students who have participated in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

IOWA-BASED TEACHING ARTIST TRAINING DISCUSSION

Goals for the meeting:
● Explore needs & opportunities that may be met through a state-wide teaching artist training 
● Define “teaching artist”
● Establish shared values around how & why artists engage in Iowa schools & communities
● Review current programs & resources
● Identify immediate & long-term steps to build a sustainable teaching artist field

Organized by the Iowa Arts council, a group of interested teachers, artists and organizations came together to discuss the need of providing an Iowa-Based Teaching Artist Training. Jennie Knoebel, Arts Learning Manager from the Iowa Arts Council, was a primary organizer/leader of this initiative. Now, the group is focusing on how to build a sustainable teaching artist field, researching unexplored resources and building awareness.
