Davenport Art Teachers Host Midwest Art Workshop

Picture
On Saturday, November 3rd, West, North, Central, and Creative Arts Academy art teachers hosted the Midwest Art Workshop at West High. Student attendees received portfolio reviews by 12 different colleges and art galleries across the country, interacted via Google Hangouts with current college students in their studios across the country, and enjoyed plenty of hands-on activities, including a screen printing lesson where they printed their own workshop t-shirt. Professional artist John Bald was the featured presenter, and students got the chance to work with other professional artists in hands-on situations.

AEI Member, Cappie Dobyns article featured in Iowa Core: Voice from the Field

Originally, when I began including the “why’s” behind my art lessons, it was simply to coax my seventh graders into deeper levels of engagement. Yet while all fully participated, had fun, and mastered the rubric objectives, my kiddos could not independently recall or apply the learned content in the next lesson. When I began to acknowledge their struggle for basic understanding, it was then I realized the greater importance of “why”: the facilitation of transfer.
