March 19, 2020

AEI Members:

It saddens me to announce the cancellation of the awards ceremonies for YAM & All State, planned for April 4th and May 2nd, due to the COVID-19 and the CDC recommendations for limiting social interactions. Our YAM and All State program directors are working hard to find a virtual platform to honor our students. This process is currently in development. At this point, Emerging Excellence events have been postponed and we will make a decision to reschedule or cancel as more information comes out.  Please look out for updates via email and on our Facebook page.

We will host an online Council meeting April 4th at 10:00AM. The Summer Council Retreat and Fall conference 2020 in Iowa City are going ahead as planned, however, this is subject to change as we receive news.

In the meantime, here is what you can do: nominate a teacher or professional for awards, make artwork for the Educators Art Show at our Fall Conference, submit a logo design for our Fall Conference, and vote for our next President Elect and Membership Chair election ballot when it comes out.

This is a quickly evolving situation. Any updates and further information will be posted on our Facebook page and communicated through email.

Stay Safe & Well,

Kathleen Sweet
AEI President

Coming April 1: Iowa Arts Education Data Project

Picture
The Iowa Arts Education Data Project will showcase Iowa’s arts education data through a user-friendly, interactive dashboard. The dashboard is intended to promote meaningful dialogue around arts education across the state; and to encourage equitable and data-driven decisions by schools, districts, educators, community members, and policymakers that support a well-rounded education for all Iowa students.

The Iowa Arts Education Data Project will display high school course and enrollment data by fine arts discipline - dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and media arts/other - as well as by grade level, gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Stakeholders can use the data to determine areas of strength as well as areas of need. By providing a variety of demographic lenses as well as various grain sizes by which to view the data - state, AEA region, district, and school - the dashboard provides compelling snapshots of fine arts education access and opportunities across Iowa.

The dashboard will be accessible through the Iowa Department of Education Fine Arts page and will go live on Wednesday, April 1st.  Districts and schools will have an early viewing window from March 16th-31st. To learn more visit the Arts Education Data Project national website or contact Angela Matsuoka at  angela.matsuoka@iowa.gov.
