LETTER FROM OUR AEI PRESIDENTHello! I'm Melissa Nelson, the current AEI President. I hope all our members are doing well, and feeling at least a little bit rested for the second half of one of the most challenging school years we've been through. Some of us are face to face, some are hybrid, and some are fully virtual- and ALL of us are doing our very best to serve our students. I personally have been taking it one day at a time- while trying to keep my head above water and my spirits high, and it's been hard. We as art teachers are amazingly flexible and willing to jump through hoops to do our jobs and care for ourselves and our families. Every time I read my email, open up my social media or talk to another art teacher (in Iowa and beyond), I'm floored again and again at our dedication. I'm so proud to be an art educator- even when the world is crazy and things change quickly. There is hope and we are often touchstones for our students' hope. I would invite anyone who needs a moment to talk to email or even text or call me at 641-751-9153. I have found that talking with another art teacher helps me when I'm struggling, as sometimes only another art teacher understands!
We will be doing YAM this year, but like last year it's a little different. We will be doing a virtual show again, and invite everyone to enter both 2D art and 3D art! Normally we don't have the ability to show 3D art, and this year we would love to see all that's happening! We will be sending out a form like the previous years, but this one will include uploading a photo (or two for 3D art). Thank you to everyone for all you do- and know that it's ok to stop and have a cup of tea or coffee and take a moment to breathe. -Melissa Nelson AEI President
