  | The Art of Storytelling - The act of storytelling has been around long before recorded history. From cave paintings to teaching children to read picture books today, we have been engaging the imagination through stories throughout history. Stories have been critical in our communities and lives as a way to help us remember our history. Stories teach, entertain and inspire us. How do you use stories to teach, entertain and inspire your students? How have stories inspired you? What tips or strategies do you have to share? Do you know a great art educator who has something to share? Encourage them by nominating them to present at the 2019 Fall Conference. Both you and your nominee will be entered in a chance to get a free conference registration each time you nominate. Every time you nominate is another chance to win a "Golden Ticket" to the conference! Nomination closes July 1st, 2019. Golden Ticket Winner will be announced in August. |
wHY STRANGERS?
aEI tEACHING ARTIST, HEIDI HERNANDEZ EXHIBITS AT FIGGE ART MUSEUM, DAVENPORT
This installation expresses the importance of listening and conversations among people. Inspired by StoryCorps, this exhibit invites the viewer to harvest the stories that exist in our community and become more connected to others through spoken words.
Listening, truly listening, is a form of admiration, the highest form of compassion and respect. What power comes with a good listen? Does it empower the storyteller, or maybe the person listening benefits more? We live among people who have experienced unthinkable events. Strangers pass us by, holding hopes and desires, passions and obstacles; their stories hold the power to inspire greatness. What if we just took the time to listen, listen with our full attention?

 | ENHANCING A SENSE OF PLACE AT THE NEW POLICE & FIRE BUILDING |
In a city still on the mend from last summer’s tragic tornado, Marshalltown is coming together once again, this time with a public art installation that will highlight the completed Police & Fire Building, at the 909 South 2nd Street.
Following a 7-0 vote by the city council, $55,000 was budgeted for a piece of art to visually elevate the new building. A week ago, a formal Request for Qualifications (RFQ) was released for a national call to artist/artist team to respond with their qualifications for the future piece. The RFQ deadline is Friday, June 14, 2019. The project is being led by the Marshalltown Public Art Committee (MPAC), a program of the Arts & Cultural Alliance created to be a resource for the city of Marshalltown

This course introduces concrete art skills needed to apply to an art gallery as well as provide information and inspiration for developing your art to a professional level by an art director.
Week 1: Class includes guided visits to artist studios and galleries. Students will create notes and ideas for developing their own art and create a balanced portfolio. They will also learn requirements for applying to specific kinds of galleries.
Week 2: Students will meet at the Ankeny Art Center and learn gallery presentation, pricing and framing. Each student will create a business plan for managing an art career.
