FAQ
What is All State Art?
Students submit a portfolio of 8 digital images of their work and an artist statement. These portfolios will be judged by college professors and working artists. The top 20% in each class will be selected as that class's All State Art Team, and will be honored at an awards ceremony at the Des Moines Art Festival. These students will receive a personalized plaque and have a poster of their work on display at the Des Moines Art Festival in Des Moines June 27th-29th. The three top scoring schools, based on their top five individual portfolio scores, will be awarded the prestigious title of “All State Art Program.”
Classifications
Classifications for AEI programs shall match the Iowa High School Wrestling class divisions using the current year’s official 9-11 enrollment as reported on the BEDS document to the IHSAA to determine classifications for the ensuing year. There will be a minimum of three classes that will divide the membership into classes of relative equal opportunity for students.
2025 Classifications are as follows:
Class 3A: 9-11 Top 65 Schools
Class 2A: 9-11 Next 95 Schools, 66-160
Class 1A: 9-11 The rest of the schools. 161+
For the purpose of All-State Art, there will be an All-State team for each classification comprising the top 20% of portfolios submitted in that class. The All-State team for each class shall not be less than 3 portfolios selected even if it means more than 20% of the entries are selected in that classification.

Juniors and Seniors are the only students who can submit portfolios to All State. These students must submit 8 works of art as part of this portfolio, however, they may not submit the same ten both Junior and Senior year. It is up to that Junior to decide if their portfolio is strong enough for two years. If not, they could wait and have a better assorted and advanced variety of work for the 2026 competition.
Portfolio Requirements:

Copyright and Fair use resources
It is very important that students understand what is and isn't copyright infringement. We all know that students take inspiration from several sources, however the All State terms and conditions clearly state that submissions must come from the students' own mind and ideas, meaning that "studies" taken almost identically cannot be included in a portfolio. Not only can a copyright situation hurt the students reputation, but it can damage the integrity of our All State program. Starting in 2015, we added a clause to the All State Terms that states,
[" Entries found to be in violation of copyright guidelines during or after competition will be disqualified and stripped of their title awards and benefits. Participants’ name and photos will be removed from records of All State winners, and all AEI publications and the student will be disqualified from all future AEI All State competitions."]
