LETTER FROM OUR AEI PRESIDENTHello! I'm Melissa Nelson, the current AEI President. I hope all our members are doing well, and feeling at least a little bit rested for the second half of one of the most challenging school years we've been through. Some of us are face to face, some are hybrid, and some are fully virtual- and ALL of us are doing our very best to serve our students. I personally have been taking it one day at a time- while trying to keep my head above water and my spirits high, and it's been hard. We as art teachers are amazingly flexible and willing to jump through hoops to do our jobs and care for ourselves and our families. Every time I read my email, open up my social media or talk to another art teacher (in Iowa and beyond), I'm floored again and again at our dedication. I'm so proud to be an art educator- even when the world is crazy and things change quickly. There is hope and we are often touchstones for our students' hope. I would invite anyone who needs a moment to talk to email or even text or call me at 641-751-9153. I have found that talking with another art teacher helps me when I'm struggling, as sometimes only another art teacher understands!
We will be doing YAM this year, but like last year it's a little different. We will be doing a virtual show again, and invite everyone to enter both 2D art and 3D art! Normally we don't have the ability to show 3D art, and this year we would love to see all that's happening! We will be sending out a form like the previous years, but this one will include uploading a photo (or two for 3D art). Thank you to everyone for all you do- and know that it's ok to stop and have a cup of tea or coffee and take a moment to breathe. -Melissa Nelson AEI President

AEI Members: It saddens me to announce the cancellation of the awards ceremonies for YAM & All State, planned for April 4th and May 2nd, due to the COVID-19 and the CDC recommendations for limiting social interactions. Our YAM and All State program directors are working hard to find a virtual platform to honor our students. This process is currently in development. At this point, Emerging Excellence events have been postponed and we will make a decision to reschedule or cancel as more information comes out. Please look out for updates via email and on our Facebook page. We will host an online Council meeting April 4th at 10:00AM. The Summer Council Retreat and Fall conference 2020 in Iowa City are going ahead as planned, however, this is subject to change as we receive news. In the meantime, here is what you can do: nominate a teacher or professional for awards, make artwork for the Educators Art Show at our Fall Conference, submit a logo design for our Fall Conference, and vote for our next President Elect and Membership Chair election ballot when it comes out. This is a quickly evolving situation. Any updates and further information will be posted on our Facebook page and communicated through email. Stay Safe & Well, Kathleen Sweet AEI President ArtHaus OFFERING AEA LICENSE RENEWAL COURSEComing April 1: Iowa Arts Education Data ProjectThe Iowa Arts Education Data Project will showcase Iowa’s arts education data through a user-friendly, interactive dashboard. The dashboard is intended to promote meaningful dialogue around arts education across the state; and to encourage equitable and data-driven decisions by schools, districts, educators, community members, and policymakers that support a well-rounded education for all Iowa students.
The Iowa Arts Education Data Project will display high school course and enrollment data by fine arts discipline - dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and media arts/other - as well as by grade level, gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Stakeholders can use the data to determine areas of strength as well as areas of need. By providing a variety of demographic lenses as well as various grain sizes by which to view the data - state, AEA region, district, and school - the dashboard provides compelling snapshots of fine arts education access and opportunities across Iowa. The dashboard will be accessible through the Iowa Department of Education Fine Arts page and will go live on Wednesday, April 1st. Districts and schools will have an early viewing window from March 16th-31st. To learn more visit the Arts Education Data Project national website or contact Angela Matsuoka at [email protected]. |
