Hosted by Pat Stevens (in her new art room)


Reason:  To connect, support each other, and share our wisdom so we can all be better teachers that prepare our students for future success as creative thinkers!!!
Cost:  Sharing yourself, your expertise, and your talents as a professional art educator. (In other words, free)
Agenda:  9:00-12:00  Make and take workshops in stations; we will present and then you can choose and try at your own pace.Viking Knit

  • Jewelry:  Viking Knit, button rings, pewter casting demonstration ****if you want to try Viking knit, please bring 26 or 28 guage wire with you!!!  Start with the cheap stuff at hobby lobby!  For rings we use 18 guage for button rings and 22 for bead rings ( I will have a limited amout with me that you could purchase for $1-2.)
  • Shaving Cream Prints
  • Monochromatic sculptural/painting
  • Painting with primaries: A few examples and lessons for color mixing.



12:00-1:00  Lunch  Bring a salad to share for pot luck and a beverage.

1:00-3:00 Lesson Plan sharing
Bring a lesson to share (15-20 copies) and/or an example to show
Bring ideas to share on how you incorporate subjects like math, science, reading,  6+1 traits, what works, cross curricular cooperation, theme projects, special programs, visiting artists, museums, integration, mentoring, or any other activity that enhances the teaching/learning environment in your school.

Youth Art Month 2012

Art work for the 2012 YAM Show at the State Historical Building was juried on January 28, 2012 at the Winter Board Meeting. Plan to attend the Scholastic Art and YAM Reception and Celebration at the Historical Building, Des Moines, on March 11.

 

 


 

AEI All-State Artist Team Forms Available

All-State Chair Maggie Harlow-Vogt has provided all of the forms for All-State Team nomination and portfolio submissions. Go to the All-State Team for information and forms. Portfolios Submission deadline is March 16, 2012. The portfolio review will be March 24, 2012. Judging will be at the Ames Library on April 14, 2012.

The reception for the 2012 All-State Team members will be Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Grandview University.

 

Take It Outside

The Department of Natural Resources invites you to participate in their first “Take It Outside” Art Contest. Students are encouraged to use their artistic skills to create an image that expresses what they like to do when they “Take It Outside,” and encourages others to get outside, too. For complete details, check out the Contest Rules.

Winning entries will receive prizes and grants for outdoor experiences. Winning entries will be used for upcoming promotions (e.g., banners, pull up displays, written reports, Outreach Trailer Wraps) and displayed at the DNR building during the Iowa State Fair. All entries will be posted on the DNR website and Facebook® page and displayed at district DNR offices/hatcheries.

Snapshot Iowa Snapshot Iowa

The second annual Snapshot Iowa, a photography contest for 7th – 12th graders, has been announced.  This program is sponsored by the Architecture in the Schools Committee of the Iowa Architectural Foundation, and is open to all Iowa students in these grades. Entry deadline is March 14, 2012.

Download a flyer for your use which explains dates, rules and prizes for this contest.  One $100 cash prize will be awarded to each of two categories: 7th – 9th Grade and 10th – 12th Grade.  The committee reserves the right to award Honorable Mention recipients as well.

ABC Poster

The Architecture By Children Drawing Contest theme for this year is Historic Iowa Architecture, and encourages students to draw an historic Iowa building that is meaningful to them.  Historic buildings are typically 50 years old or more.

Two statewide winners (one from each age group; K-3 and 4-6) will each receive a cash prize of $100.  Two regional winners (one from each age group) will receive a cash prize of $50 each.  To see what region you belong to, please click here.

Entries must be received by April 13, 2012 and must be on an official entry form, available along with printable posters on the Iowa Architectural Foundation website.

AP Petition

You might be interested in signing a petition concerning AP Art History and college admissions scores in Iowa. The petition states:

...That all AP (Advanced Placement) classes deserve to be included in the RAI (Regents Admission Index). We understand that the  RAI Score is a formula which determines automatic acceptance to Iowa's State Universities.  It is also a factor in determining scholarships for our students. The index combines four factors deemed most valid in predicting success at regent universities: ACT or SAT test score, high school rank, high school cumulative grade-point average, and the number of completed high school core courses.

     Almost all AP classes are included in this formula. However, AP Art History, AP studio classes, AP Music classes and AP Computer Sciences classes are excluded because they are not "core" courses.

Iowa Scholarship for the Arts
Applications Due Feb. 1


Iowa high school students planning to enter college next fall with a major in an arts discipline can apply for a 2012 Iowa Scholarship for the Arts by Wednesday, Feb. 1 2012.
 
The Iowa Arts Council offers the scholarship annually to Iowa students who will graduate from high school during the 2011-2012 academic year and have a proven artistic ability in dance, literature, music, theater, traditional arts or visual arts. The application is available at www.iowaartscouncil.org.
 
Each recipient will receive $1,000 toward his or her 2012-2013 college tuition and related expenses as a full-time undergraduate at a fully accredited Iowa college or university with a major in one or more of the disciplines considered for the award.
 
To be considered for the award, students must complete the scholarship application available at www.iowaartscouncil.org, write an essay about their future career goals in the arts, provide a work sample and include two letters of recommendation.
