Lt. Governor Judge Greets Student Artists for Youth Art Month

 
 
DES MOINES – Lt. Governor Patty Judge on March 31, 2010 hosted a group of young artists whose works have been displayed in the State Capitol during Youth Art Month .
 
Art Educators of Iowa sponsors a Youth Art Month exhibit at the State Historical Building each March. Outstanding student works are selected as Governor’s Show winners and are displayed in the Governor’s  and Lt. Governor’s offices for part of the month.
 
Promoting support for the arts is a key initiative for Lt. Governor Judge.
 
“Governor Culver and I have enjoyed showing the works of these talented young artists in our offices this month,” Lt. Governor Judge said. “We are proud to showcase arts education each year during Youth Art Month. I want to thank these students for their hard work, and their teachers for their support.”
 
In conjunction with National Youth Art Month, Governor Chet Culver proclaimed March 2010 as Iowa Arts Education Month. The text of Governor Culver’s proclamation follows:
 

PROCLAMATION
 
Whereas, arts education contributes powerful educational benefits to all elementary, middle, and secondary students, including:
·        Arts education develops students’ creative problem-solving and critical thinking abilities;
·        Arts education teaches sensitivity to beauty, order, and other expressive qualities;
·        Arts education gives students a deeper understanding of multi-cultural values and beliefs;
·        Arts education reinforces and brings to life what students learn in other subjects; and
·        Arts education interrelates student learning in such essential skills as collaboration and innovation, assisting real-life and work readiness; and
 
Whereas, our national leaders have acknowledged the necessity of including arts experiences in all students’ education for the “whole child”; and
 
Whereas, March is officially recognized as National Youth Art Month:
 
Now, therefore, I, Chester J. Culver, Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby proclaim March 2010, as Iowa Arts Education Month and encourage the support of quality school arts programs for our children and youth.
