Treasurer: Treasurer Carol Webb presented the report. Chris Noel moved to accept the report and Barbara Caldwell seconded. Report was accepted.

Membership:  Pam Muench reported that we have 203 members. She had lists of members for area reps. Pam suggested that she make a new application form with the new membership fees listed.

Message: The electronic Message has been going out to approximately 60 members. Debby Yellick-Manly suggests sending her emails of non-member teachers who might be interested in being sent a sample of the newsletter.  Articles for the newsletter should be sent to Debby Yellick-Manly and to web master Nancy Sojka.

Website: Nancy Sojka has been actively updating the website.  She is also working on adding more links to other newsletters.  She announced that she would be retiring from teaching at the end of this year. At that time she would be willing to take over the electronic Message as well as maintaining the website.

Historian:  Susan Noonan has posted pictures from the fall conference on the website and through emails.  She said that she would also be willing to work with teachers to photograph the Yam exhibit.

Sponsorship:  Regina Smith talked about the mini-grant through the Iowa Arts Council for the Iron Pour that was held at the ’06 conference in Des Moines. She also passed out information about different organization that could be approached for support of some of the events that are sponsored by AEI.  Making personal connections with some of the businesses are important, so Regina asked if we have members who know people who work at Pioneer, Meredith Corporation, 3-M, Wells-Fargo to contact her.  She is working with the conference planning and All State committees to pursue funding sources.

IAAE/Issues and Directions: The Alliance board meeting was being held at the same time as the AEI board meeting so reports were made several different times during the meeting. Ken Esveld asked for continued support and passed out membership forms. Ken also mentioned the grant that IAAE had for developing mentorship programs in Iowa Arts organizations. Dawn Orpeza spoke about the Arts in Iowa Workplace forum to be held at the Historical Building on February 26 as well as the Cultural Advocacy Showcase at the Statehouse on February 27.  Pat Grubb said that she would be willing to take the work not selected for Yam for possible display at the Statehouse on Feb. 27.  Leon Kuehner spoke at the end of the meeting more specifically about the Mentorship Grant and the need for AEI to select a Mentorship Chair to begin working other arts groups this summer.

Yam:  Danell Duncan and the Yam committee worked throughout the day selecting work for the exhibit.  Danell requested that in the future teachers list their AEA by number rather than name on entry forms. The website has the information and labels for Yam and they are now set up so that you can type information on the computer form.  Check the website in case of inclement weather to find out if the reception on March 3 is postponed. Snow date for the celebration will be March 10.

Traveling Exhibits:  Longtime committee members Don Kremmer and Marilyn Green offered their resignations from the committee.  Both expressed that it was a difficult decision but that they enjoyed their years of service to the organization.  Board members expressed their appreciation for all the work that they had done on the board, especially for their work with the traveling exhibits. Shelley Lawson will continue on the committee working on the elementary exhibits and she thought that she knew someone who would work on the secondary exhibit.

Conference:  Tammy Hoppe reported that the ’07 conference would be held at the YMCA camp near Boone, Iowa on Oct. 12, 13, 14.  The ’08 conference would be in Dubuque and that the ’09 conference would be in Cedar Falls. Pat Grubb submitted a financial report of the fall ’06 conference, which made approximately $2,400.  She also spoke about plans for the ’07 conference which would be making connections between science, nature, and art.

Awards and Public Relations:  Becky Kobos passed out nomination forms. Chris Noel encouraged people to make nominations for the awards.  Barbara Caldwell announced that she will be receiving the Kathy Connors Teaching Award for mentorship and collaboration at the Woman’s Caucus Reception on Friday night at 8:00 at the National conference in New York in March.

INSEA: Barbara Caldwell encouraged members to help make cultural connections with their students. She mentioned Eric Carle’s “Draw me a Star” and “The Velveteen Rabbit” which say it is okay to be different and important to be loved.

All-State:  Dave Pratt reported that the committee has been working to promote All-State through Art Scene Magazine. The reception will be held at Grandview College this year on May 5th.  This is a change of venue because the Des Moines Art Center will now be charging $100 an hour for their facilities.  Judging will be in Perry on March 31.  The committee will be looking for another judge and a statistician because two former committee members will be resigning.  Dave and Regina have been working on sponsorships for All-State. Dave reported that he will be having a meeting with the CEO from HyVee stores.  A motion was made by Pat Grubb: Teachers need to be members of AEI to be able to enter students in All-State starting in 2008.  The motion was seconded by Pat Lenien. moved passed.

New Business:  A motion was made by  Ellen Henkel:  AEI should contribute $200 in support of the Western Region sponsorship of the NAEA leadership institute to be held in Kansas City June 20-24, 2007. It was seconded by Margaret Parks and the motion was passed.

Elementary:  Janiece Kinzle reported that things are going well.  She is interested in organizing a Crayola workshop for her district.  The suggestion was made to send information about classes in different AEA’s to the website so that all members would have access to that information. Examples being the 24th NE Iowa Art Show, River Weaving, and Big Muddy Ceramic show in Dubuque.

Secondary:  Ronda Sternhagen talked about an article she found about the top 50 artworks to teach to students.  She passed out copies.  Her concern was that the list did not include women or minorities.  Ronda suggested that we should develop an AEI top 50 list.  She had designed a nomination form as well as a lesson plan format.  Ronda is willing to organize this information.  She also shared a book called “The Wisdom of a Starry Night” by Sharon Marson, a 2006 book published by Barnes and Noble.  She pointed out how this book could be used with students.

After a brief visit with Leon Kuehner the meeting was adjourned by Lucy McLennan at 3:30.

Respectfully submitted,

Becky Kobos (for amy Pfeiler-Wunder, secretary)
