Ben Harle Dowling Catholic High School Dear Art Educator: This is AEI's twelfth All-State Art Awards competition. This initiative is in response to the need of our organization to recognize our best junior and senior visual art students. The AEI Board voted this summer that only AEI members may participate in this event. We will honor the All-State Recipients at AEI's reception at Grand View College on Saturday, May 3, 2008. On Saturday, March 29, 2008 the judges will select 12 students to represent Iowa at this annual event. The judges for 2008 are: Justine Zimmer (Hometown Perry, Iowa/Studiolo--Gallery Owner) new Aaron Tinder (Grand View College) Julie Schlarman (Simpson College) new Betsy Peterson (Betsy Peterson Designs--Gallery Owner) new At the summer AEI Board meeting the members voted to drop the 2.8 GPA requirement for this contest. In addition, the members voted to drop the GPA criteria from the judges score sheets. Finally, the AEI Board requested that the Teacher's Statement be reviewed and recommendations for change be submitted before the 2009 contest period. NOMINEE'S STATEMENT (Typed on standard typing paper300 words) Please use the format provided on this web site . NOMINATOR'S STATEMENT (Typed on school letterhead--250 words) Again, creativity in writing was strongly recommended by all judges. Using a school letterhead start the statement with the student's name. The statement must be typed and should be sequentially focused on the following theme: Conceptual Development of the Student (This may include personal qualities and strengths.) Sign your name at the end of the statement. DIGITAL INVENTORY SHEET (Typed on one page of standard typing paper) Set up a two column (portrait) format and include the following: Name_________________________ School________________________ Drawing 1 Include the following sub-categories for each heading.
Drawing 2 Example: Images 3-10 Digital Image of Self Note: One point per judge will be deducted if this sheet is missing or not typed. Submitting Digital PortfoliosAn Art Portfolio consists of a body of ten works of art, representing the student's best work. The portfolio must contain 2 drawings. The other 8 works may be in any media. All work must be new to the competition. Electronic image files must adhere to the following specifications: Only one Portfolio per CD: take the time to title the CD. Last Name 2008 Do not use DVDs to file digital images. Standard JPEG files: Each JPEG should be captured by a digital camera or if small enough, on a scanner. _ One JPEG for each work. No detail images please. Crop 2-D images to the matting or the actual artwork. _ Resolution: Each JPEG file must be approximately 1500 x 2100 dpi (or 5 x 7 inches) _ File Size: Each JPEG file should be between 8 and 10 Megabytes. Do not exceed 10 Megabites. Animation, Movies and other media: No more than 2 of this media per portfolio. Each clip should not be longer than 1 minute. These should be on a separate DVD and must be formatted to play in any DVD player. (Please, try it out before submission) If submissions are longer they will be disqualified. Identify the media on the inventory sheet. Naming the File: The file name indicates the order that the student intends for the works to be viewed. The file name should correspond to the order of the slides on the inventory sheet. NOTE: By entering this contest, the student automatically gives permission to the Art Educators of Iowa to use any or all images for promotional purposes. Even though the GPA requirement has been eliminated students must still submit an official transcript (4.00 scale only) for research purposes. Please highlight the GPA on the transcript. Note, one point per judge will be deducted if this document is missing. There will be a $10.00 charge per student entered. A check made out to Art Educators of Iowa, must accompany the entry packet. If you have multiple entries, you may submit one check for all. School purchase orders will not be accepted. The AEI All-State Nomination Form, to be filled out by the teacher, allows for the listing of other art teachers that may have taught the nominated student. The names will appear on the plaques as printed. Please submit only one Nominator's Statement for each student. This should be a written endorsement by the same teacher who is submitting the Teacher Nomination Form. Check the AEI Website for an additional Teacher Nomination Form that may be duplicated. As the student's teacher you are required, to accompany the student and his or her artwork to the awards ceremony on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008. Each student must have a presenter. If you cannot attend, it is your responsibility to find a replacement. Schools not represented will forfeit all scholarship money and gifts. Plaques and certificates are an exception. Please do not type any of the requested documents front-to-back. Untyped statements or inventory sheets will be docked one point per judge on the score sheet. Each student entry should have its own envelope. Multiple entries may be sent together in one package.
